Checked Baggage Allowances
IMPORTANT: Following baggage allowance applies to customers with a reservation made on or after May 15, 2008 for travel on or after July 15, 2008.
Customers are allowed to check the following amounts of luggage free of charge:
* No piece may exceed a weight of 32 kg (70lb) or linear dimensions (length + width + height) of 292 cm (115 in) or a length of 203 cm (80 in). For baggage exceeding these limits, please refer to Excess Baggage Fees. ** Garment bags may exceed these linear dimensions, though the maximum number and weight restrictions still apply. *** Baggage allowance for customers who have purchased Tango and Tango Plus fares and are travelling within Canada and between Canada and continental U.S. including Hawaii. **** Baggage allowance for customers who have purchased Latitude fares and are travelling within Canada and between Canada and continental U.S. including Hawaii. Also applies to customers who have purchased any Economy fares and are travelling to a destination outside Canada and continental U.S. including Hawaii.

Important information for passengers flying on code share flight(s).
Exceptions: To/from Brazil: The maximum weight per bag is 32kg (70lb). For Executive Class, Executive First and Star Alliance Gold, total weight of all three bags not to exceed 69kg (150lb). For Air Canada Super Elite, total weight of all four bags not to exceed 92kg (200lb). To/from Japan: For tickets purchased before June 11th 2007, the maximum weight per bag is 32 kg (70 lbs).
Packing Tips
Please note that some seemingly harmless goods can be dangerous on board an aircraft and should not be packed in either checked or carry-on baggage:
No camping fuels (e.g. propane) no matches, no lighters or other dangerous goods as described under the dangerous goods page.
Sports Equipment
If checked in separately, each item within the sports equipment category is considered a piece of baggage that counts towards your checked baggage allowance and is subject to all the rules and restrictions that apply to checked baggage. An excess piece fee will be collected at the airport for each piece that exceeds the free baggage allowance on an Air Canada or Air Canada Jazz flight.
Important note: Please be sure to carefully read and respect the following guidelines for packing your sports equipment before arrival at the airport. If otherwise packaged, the item(s) will only be accepted with a limited release form (to be signed at check-in), releasing Air Canada of all liability. Passengers are asked to pre-register all sports equipment (by checking the "Travelling with sports equipment" box after entering your name and seat preference) at the time of booking or by calling Air Canada Reservations. By registering sports equipment prior to check-in, passengers will benefit from applicable waivers on:
the oversize fee for skis, snowboards, hockey sticks, and hockey bags; and
the excess piece fee(s) for hockey sticks, ski and snow boots (when carried along with skis or snowboard)
Customers who elect not to pre-register their sporting equipment will not be able to benefit from above-mentioned waivers when checking in at the airport on the day of departure.With the exception of the above-mentioned waivers for pre-registered items, sports equipment is subject to all applicable Excess Baggage Fees.
Archery equipment
Covers a bow and arrows suitably packaged in a rigid and/or hard shell container specifically designed for shipping. If otherwise packaged, the item(s) will only be accepted with a limited release form (to be signed at check-in), releasing Air Canada of liability.
Bicycles
Bicycles are accepted on a space available basis only and should be pre-registered at the time of booking. Each bicycle counts as one piece of baggage towards your total checked baggage count, and for each bicycle there is an additional fixed handling charge of $50 CAD/USD plus applicable taxes on one-way flights and on each-way travel on round-trip and multi-segment flights operated by Air Canada and Air Canada Jazz. If your baggage—including bicycle—are over your permitted baggage count, you will also be charged the applicable excess baggage fees accordingly. Latitude and Executive fare customers are entitled to check one bicycle per passenger at no charge for travel within Canada, and between Canada and the US on a space-available basis only.
The bicycle must be placed—with handlebars fixed sideways and pedals removed—in a rigid and/or hard shell container specifically designed for shipping or (when transporting collapsible bicycles) in a bicycle suitcase. If not packaged in a container, Air Canada will provide a plastic bicycle bag and will accept the item with a limited release form (see box above).
Fishing equipment
Each of the following is considered an individual item when packed separately: Rods, reels, landing net, boots, and tackle box. The fishing rod(s) must be packaged in a rigid and/or hard shell container specifically designed for shipping.
Golf clubs
One golf bag containing no more than 14 clubs, 12 golf balls and one pair of golf shoes is considered one item.
The bag and clubs must be fully enclosed in a hard shell container specifically designed for shipping.
Hockey equipment
Each of the following is considered an individual item when packed separately: one equipment bag and up to two hockey sticks.
The hockey stick(s) must be packaged in a rigid and/or hard shell container specifically designed for shipping. If not packed in such a container, the sticks must be taped together and will only be accepted with a limited release form (see box above). Hockey bags must not contain any clothing.
Scuba diving equipment
Each of the following is considered an individual item when packed separately: empty scuba tank, air supply regulator, pressure gauge, tank harness, face mask, pair of diving fins, snorkel, knife, spear gun, air pistol and safety vest. All equipment must be securely packed in a rigid and/or hard shell container specifically designed for shipping.
Skis and skates and snowboards
Each of the following is considered an individual item when packed separately: one pair of skis (snow or water), one snowboard, one set of poles, one snowboard, one pair of boots, one pair of skates, or a single slalom. Skis and poles or snowboard must be packaged in a rigid and/or hardshell container specifically designed for shipping. Two pairs of skis packed together are counted as two items.
Surfboards
Surfboards are accepted on a space available basis only and should be pre-registered at the time of booking. Each surfboard counts as one piece of baggage towards your total checked baggage count, and for each surfboard there is an additional fixed handling charge of $50 CAD/USD plus applicable taxes on one-way flights and on each-way travel on round-trip and multi-segment flights operated by Air Canada and Air Canada Jazz. If your baggage—including surfboard—are over your permitted baggage count, you will also be charged the applicable excess baggage fees accordingly. Latitude and Executive fare customers are entitled to check one surfboard per passenger at no charge for travel within Canada, and between Canada and the US on a space-available basis only.
Surfboard must be in a rigid and/or hard shell container specifically designed for shipping. The overall measurement of the item (length, width, and height) must be less than 109 inches (or 277 cm) and no longer than 80 inches (203 cm). If not packaged in a container, Air Canada will provide a plastic transport bag and will accept the item with a limited release form (see box above).
Not accepted as checked baggage:
Hunting Equipment
If checked in separately, each item within the hunting equipment category is considered a piece of baggage that counts towards your checked baggage allowance and is subject to all the rules and restrictions that apply to checked baggage. An excess piece fee will be collected at the airport for each piece that exceeds the free baggage allowance on an Air Canada or Air Canada Jazz flight.
Important note: These following items should be pre-registered at the time of booking. Please be sure to carefully read and respect the following guidelines for packing your hunting equipment before arrival at the airport. When transporting any of these items, it is advised that you arrive an additional 30 minutes before your normally recommended check-in time. If not packaged correctly, Air Canada will only accept these items with a limited release form (to be signed at check-in), releasing Air Canada of all liability.
Ammunition
Ammunition is only accepted in checked baggage and must be packaged separately from the firearm. Ammunition allowance is limited to 5 kg (11 LB) per passenger. Only shells or cartridges are acceptable types of ammunition. Gunpowder and gunpowder pellets are strictly prohibited.
Ammunition must be packed securely in a strong container of wood, metal or fiberboard, plainly marked "ammunition," or in the original inner carton. To avoid shock movement, the carton must be placed inside a suitcase and cushioned with clothing.
Firearms
Hunting rifles and shotguns are accepted as checked baggage only, and must be unloaded. Before Air Canada accepts the firearm, you must sign a declaration form attesting that the gun is unloaded.In addition to any applicable excess baggage fee, a fixed handling charge of $50 CAD/USD plus applicable taxes per item on one-way flights and on each-way travel on round-trip and multi-segment flights operated by Air Canada and Air Canada Jazz applies.*The Canadian government charges additional fees for bringing firearms into Canada. The firearm must be inhibited from being fired by using a secure, locking device mechanism or trigger lock on the weapon. The firearm must be packaged and locked in a specially designed, opaque case that cannot be easily broken into during transport.
Antlers or Horns
Antlers or horns are accepted as checked baggage only. Weight limit on antlers or horns is 32 kg (70 lb).In addition to any applicable excess baggage fee, a fixed handling charge of $150 CAD/USD plus applicable taxes per item on one-way flights and on each-way travel on round-trip and multi-segment flights operated by Air Canada and Air Canada Jazz applies.*Latitude and Executive fare customers are entitled to check their antlers or horns (one piece per passenger) at no charge for travel within Canada and the 50 United States.
The antlers or horns must be clean and well-wrapped in absorbent material with all points covered. The item must be suitably packaged in a rigid and/or hard shell container specifically designed for shipping. Smaller antlers wrapped in a larger set count as an additional item.
Bounty
Bounty may be substituted for a free checked baggage allowance piece if it fits within the weight and dimensions of 23kg (50lb) and 160 linear cm (63 in). However, when carried over and above this allowance, additional charges will be levied at the airport. Meat or game must be transported in a leak-proof container or wrapped in absorbent material and then placed in plastic bags inside waxed cartons. Plastic bags alone are not sufficient for transport.
Limits of Liability
Liability for loss, delay or damage to baggage for travel wholly between points in Canada is limited to $1500 CAD per passenger unless a higher value is declared in advance and additional charges are paid. Liability for loss, delay or damage to baggage for travel to/from most international destinations (including domestic portions of international journeys) is up to approximately $9.07 USD per pound ($20.00 USD per kilo) for checked baggage and $400 USD per passenger for unchecked baggage.
